in fact, it was not introduced by Blaise de Vigenere. In 1553, Giovan Batista Belaso introduced the idea of polyalphabetic substituion cipher, the same as Vigenere introduced in 1585. It is often miscalled Vigenere’s cipher but the original author is Belaso.
